Jon Clayton:

Despite what you might think.

Jon Clayton:

I don't just produce this podcast.

Jon Clayton:

I also work directly with small practice founders and sole practitioners

Jon Clayton:

to help them achieve their goals.

Jon Clayton:

And overcome challenges in their own business.

Jon Clayton:

So I thought I'd take you behind the scenes.

Jon Clayton:

And share a few stories with you from my work supporting small practices.

Jon Clayton:

Jon Clayton:

and small firm architecture practice owners, just like you who want to build

Jon Clayton:

a profitable future proof architecture business that fits around their life.

Jon Clayton:

sole practitioner in architecture.

Struggling to find clarity or reach your goals.

Jon Clayton:

Consider working with me of a personalized one-to-one support through

Jon Clayton:

coaching consulting and mentoring.

Jon Clayton:

your team, I've got you covered.

Jon Clayton:

That's J O n@architecturebusinessclub.com for more information.

Jon Clayton:

Don't let me tell you more about how I support small practices.

Jon Clayton:

Hey everyone.

Jon Clayton:

Thanks for joining me today.

Jon Clayton:

I want you to tell you a little bit about how I'm supporting small

Jon Clayton:

practices beyond the podcast and.

Jon Clayton:

I thought the best way to explain that was to share a few

Jon Clayton:

real client stories with you.

Jon Clayton:

Before I do that though.

Jon Clayton:

I wanted to explain broadly what I do and who I work with.

Jon Clayton:

So, what do I actually offer besides the podcast?

Jon Clayton:

Well, I do coaching consulting and mentoring on a monthly or one-off basis.

Jon Clayton:

I can help provide audits, assessments, and reports looking at your business.

Jon Clayton:

I can provide a, a fractional role within your business.

Jon Clayton:

So whether that's assisting you with the operations in your practice or with

Jon Clayton:

the marketing side of things, Can also provide support with actually doing

Jon Clayton:

the architectural drafting work through trusted outsourcing partners that I

Jon Clayton:

have partnership arrangements with.

Jon Clayton:

Uh, so that's card and BIM supports.

Jon Clayton:

They also offer the opportunity for brands to work with me as well.

Jon Clayton:

So brand partnerships.

Jon Clayton:

And podcast sponsorship is something that I'm happy to have a conversation around.

Jon Clayton:

And I also still do a very small number of architectural projects, which

Jon Clayton:

typically are domestic client projects.

Jon Clayton:

So who, who is it that I actually work with?

Jon Clayton:

It's primarily the founders of small practices, micro sized practices,

Jon Clayton:

partnerships and sole practitioners.

Jon Clayton:

So, if you are a practice of one, or lead up to a team of around 10

Jon Clayton:

people, you can work with me and I can support you on a one-to-one basis.

Jon Clayton:

If you wrote a bigger practice, I may still be able to help you depending

Jon Clayton:

on the type of support that you need.

Jon Clayton:

And it doesn't matter whereabouts you're based in the world,

Jon Clayton:

as long as you speak English.

Jon Clayton:

I'm afraid.

Jon Clayton:

That's the only language that I'm fluent in a little bit of Spanish,

Jon Clayton:

but it's probably quite rusty now.

Jon Clayton:

I'm afraid.

Jon Clayton:

Um, so it doesn't matter where you're based, as long as you speak English and

Jon Clayton:

you're willing and able to meet with me online during UK business hours.

Jon Clayton:

And I found that there's an overlap between most times zones and I've managed

Jon Clayton:

to make online meeting times work with.

Jon Clayton:

Friends over in the us and folks as far afield as Australia.

Jon Clayton:

I don't particularly care about your professional title.

Jon Clayton:

So whether you are an architects and architectural technologists,

Jon Clayton:

architectural designer, interior designer.

Jon Clayton:

As long as you are in the architecture industry and you're running a business,

Jon Clayton:

then feel free to get in touch.

Jon Clayton:

So what's the main thing that I actually help practice founders do.

Jon Clayton:

Well, my goal is to help you build your dream practice.

Jon Clayton:

So one that gives you more freedom, flexibility, and fulfillment.

Jon Clayton:

And that could be by helping you a little or a lot, depending on

Jon Clayton:

your requirements on your budget.

Jon Clayton:

Some of the specific areas that I can help, small practice leaders

Jon Clayton:

and sole practitioners are around.

Jon Clayton:

Strategy systems and processes and people.

Jon Clayton:

So strategy would be things like looking at strategic planning,

Jon Clayton:

helping you have your business plan.

Jon Clayton:

Be looking at marketing strategy, your marketing plan, marketing tactics.

Jon Clayton:

To meet your business goals.

Jon Clayton:

Also helping you look at financial planning and knowing your numbers.

Jon Clayton:

Setting up, um, and optimizing existing systems you have in your business.

Jon Clayton:

And also looking at how to build the right team, whether that's through traditional

Jon Clayton:

recruitment or outsourcing options.

Jon Clayton:

Or the areas that I can support you in our.

Jon Clayton:

Developing you as a thought leader.

Jon Clayton:

Helping build your personal brand.

Jon Clayton:

Understanding out being more visible.

Jon Clayton:

Also helping you to productize your services.

Jon Clayton:

And much, much more.

Jon Clayton:

There's so many different ways that I can help you.

Jon Clayton:

So you might be wondering, do I actually have the knowledge and

Jon Clayton:

experience to help your practice?

Jon Clayton:

Well, I've had over 10 years hands-on experience working in small

Jon Clayton:

to medium sized practices first as an architectural technician.

Jon Clayton:

And then as a charted architectural technologist.

Jon Clayton:

I have another 10 plus years experience as a sole practitioner

Jon Clayton:

running my own practice.

Jon Clayton:

And whilst I have no formal business or marketing qualifications, I've

Jon Clayton:

honed my skills through seven years and counting of self guided learning.

Jon Clayton:

In-person and online training courses.

Jon Clayton:

Conference events, workshops, our mastermind.

Jon Clayton:

And that's after spending the best part of a decade, learning everything the

Jon Clayton:

hard way through my own trial and error.

Jon Clayton:

I've since had the privilege of hosting.

Jon Clayton:

Dawson's have one-to-one calls with world leading business and

Jon Clayton:

marketing experts through my podcast interviews here on the show.

Jon Clayton:

And I'm now here to share this.

Jon Clayton:

Acquired knowledge and expertise with small firm founders

Jon Clayton:

and sole practitioners.

Jon Clayton:

So that you can build your dream architecture practice without

Jon Clayton:

having to make the expensive and time-consuming mistakes that I

Jon Clayton:

have made with my own practice.

Jon Clayton:

So I feel like now's a good time to share some stories.

Jon Clayton:

So what specific problems have.

Jon Clayton:

Clients had and how have I helped them?

Jon Clayton:

So, These are just a few stories from people, but I've guided and

Jon Clayton:

supported during the past few months.

Jon Clayton:

Remember.

Jon Clayton:

Don't forget to download the architecture business, blueprint the

Jon Clayton:

step by step formula to freedom for architects, architecture, technologists,

Jon Clayton:

and architecture designers.

Jon Clayton:

rating wherever you listen to podcasts.

Jon Clayton:

Now, back to the show.

Jon Clayton:

Joe had recently started up his new architecture practice.

Jon Clayton:

That specializes in retrofit and low energy design, but he was

Jon Clayton:

struggling to manage his time and what had helped to write his business

Jon Clayton:

plan and set financial goals.

Jon Clayton:

So.

Jon Clayton:

Firstly, I introduced him to some productivity and time management tactics.

Jon Clayton:

To trial out so that he could free up his time and attention

Jon Clayton:

to work on his business.

Jon Clayton:

We then reviewed his financial forecast and I gave you feedback

Jon Clayton:

on those so that he could set some exciting yet realistic targets.

Jon Clayton:

And we also worked on his business plan so that now he has an easy to follow plan.

Jon Clayton:

That's fully aligned with his professional and personal goals.

Jon Clayton:

Rachel wanted to grow her business and start specializing and retrofit

Jon Clayton:

unsustainable design projects to.

Jon Clayton:

But she wasn't sure how to go about it.

Jon Clayton:

So during a session with me, she learned how to integrate retrofit services

Jon Clayton:

into a current architecture business and how to use content marketing to

Jon Clayton:

educate and attract those clients.

Jon Clayton:

She also learned about productizing services and the use of price

Jon Clayton:

bracketing to increase the perceived value of a main service package so

Jon Clayton:

that she could get easier sales.

Jon Clayton:

And she also got tailored advice on building her personal brand.

Jon Clayton:

Ash.

Jon Clayton:

Was heavily reliant on word of mouth for new customers and a tried digital

Jon Clayton:

marketing without much success.

Jon Clayton:

So during a session with me identified new tactics that he could use to

Jon Clayton:

improve his current marketing strategy, including building and managing more

Jon Clayton:

relationships in his CRM system.

Jon Clayton:

I'm making some tweaks to both his website.

Jon Clayton:

Copy.

Jon Clayton:

And his social media posts to show a bit more personality.

Jon Clayton:

We also explored packaging services to make them easier to

Jon Clayton:

promote to his ideal clients.

Jon Clayton:

Gary Hart pivoted from a trade background into architectural services and wanted

Jon Clayton:

to move more into project management in the future whilst maintaining.

Jon Clayton:

And improving his architectural services for domestic and

Jon Clayton:

residential design projects.

Jon Clayton:

So during our sessions together, he's developed a new business plan, this

Jon Clayton:

fully aligned with his long-term goals.

Jon Clayton:

And he's also learned how to build and manage a remote team to help

Jon Clayton:

deliver his architectural services.

Jon Clayton:

Through my outsourcing partners freeing up his time for project

Jon Clayton:

management and to work on his business.

Jon Clayton:

Mo wanted to streamline his small practice, particularly to save time

Jon Clayton:

on ad bed and managing his team.

Jon Clayton:

So jawing our session together, I was able to recommend time-saving software tools to

Jon Clayton:

reduce his admin load and help him manage his team communications more efficiently.

Jon Clayton:

I also shared a time-saving workflow.

Jon Clayton:

To produce is as existing building plans, more efficiently.

Jon Clayton:

Kathy had aspirations to start her own architectural visualization company.

Jon Clayton:

And a main challenge was finding the time to plan and finance the business launch.

Jon Clayton:

So during a session with me, we identified that by leveraging a timeframe

Jon Clayton:

systems, processes, and outsourcing, she could actually launch and grow

Jon Clayton:

her dream business without having to leave the security of her current job.

Jon Clayton:

So she could minimize her risk.

Jon Clayton:

And finally Sam wanted feedback on his new software platform

Jon Clayton:

for architecture practices.

Jon Clayton:

During our session together, I was able to test the platform's

Jon Clayton:

functionality and provide fast feedback on its usability and price point.

Jon Clayton:

He also learned about how building brand partnerships with manufacturers could

Jon Clayton:

differentiate his new offering from the longer established competitors.

Jon Clayton:

He also got strategy that he could use to launch his product to the market.

Jon Clayton:

Sounds awesome.

Jon Clayton:

Right?

Jon Clayton:

Some amazing wins there from working with those practice leaders.

Jon Clayton:

So sign me up, sign me up for a long-term retainer.

Jon Clayton:

Let's work together.

Jon Clayton:

Well, if you're thinking that I just want to say just like slow down a moment.

Jon Clayton:

I mean, like, would you ask somebody to marry you on the first day?

Jon Clayton:

I mean, probably not.

Jon Clayton:

You start by getting to know one another, maybe meeting for a coffee

Jon Clayton:

first and going on some more dates.

Jon Clayton:

And it's really the same process working with me or any of the coach or consultant.

Jon Clayton:

We want to get to know each of the first.

Jon Clayton:

And that's how we can ensure that we're a good fit to work together.

Jon Clayton:

So before deciding to work together, we would normally have one or two

Jon Clayton:

initial meetings usually held on zoom.

Jon Clayton:

And ask questions about you and your business.

Jon Clayton:

And we'll mainly be listening to what you've got to say.

Jon Clayton:

If you like me and we both agree that I'm a good fit to help you, then I can put

Jon Clayton:

together a proposal for you to consider.

Jon Clayton:

And if I don't think we're going to be a good fit.

Jon Clayton:

I'll be honest and tell you that.

Jon Clayton:

And if that's the case, I'll try and recommend an alternative solution for you.

Jon Clayton:

So you still have a way to move past whatever it is that you're stuck with.

Jon Clayton:

But how do you know the timing's right to work with somebody like me?

Jon Clayton:

Well, you know what?

Jon Clayton:

The may never be a perfect time to start working on your business with

Jon Clayton:

a coach or consultant like me, but.

Jon Clayton:

Sometimes, maybe better than others.

Jon Clayton:

And I want you to get results from working with me.

Jon Clayton:

So if I feel the timing isn't right to work with me right now,

Jon Clayton:

then I will let you know, and we can always reconnect later.

Jon Clayton:

You might be wondering how much I charge for this type of support.

Jon Clayton:

The short answer is not as much as you may think.

Jon Clayton:

The long answer is that.

Jon Clayton:

Really, we would need to delve into your business and your needs

Jon Clayton:

in a little bit more detail.

Jon Clayton:

In order for me to.

Jon Clayton:

Provide.

Jon Clayton:

Uh, proposal plus the right fit to meet your needs.

Jon Clayton:

So, how do you get started?

Jon Clayton:

So if you've listened this far, congratulations, well done.

Jon Clayton:

But seriously, if you run a practice on a curious about working with me in any way,

Jon Clayton:

let's chat, let's have a conversation.

You never know, it might even lead to you being a guest on this very show.
