Key Takeaways...

Importance of Networking:

   - Networking events and in-person interactions are critical for growth, as they provide opportunities for meeting potential clients, collaborators, and mentors.

   - Networking helps in gaining new ideas, discovering trends, building visibility, and enhancing credibility.

Debunking Myths about Networking:

   - Networking is not just for extroverts; introverts can do it too!

   - Networking should not be approached with aggressive selling; the focus should be on listening and helping others.

   - It’s not necessary to attend every event regularly; attending selectively based on your goals can be effective.

   - Tangible results can arise from networking, and it should be viewed as more than a one-time event.

Alternatives to In-Person Networking:

   - Online events and communities can be valuable substitutes when in-person attendance isn’t possible.

   - Building relationships online can still yield significant benefits, although in-person interactions often have a more substantial impact.

Networking Tips for Introverts:

   - Start with smaller events.

   - Bring a friend for support.

   - Prepare in advance by researching other attendees.

   - Focus on listening more than talking.

Strategies for Effective Networking:

   - Be authentic and true to yourself at networking events.

   - Follow up with new contacts to build lasting relationships.

   - Have a clear strategy and goals to measure the effectiveness of networking activities.

Hosting Your Own Event:

   - If local events are unavailable, consider organizing your own meetups or workshops.

   - Events can be informal and simple, such as a gathering at a local café or pub.

Upcoming Networking Opportunities:

   - Engage in larger industry events like London Build 2024 for extensive networking and learning opportunities.

   - Take advantage of casual meetups alongside formal events to build deeper connections.

Jon Clayton:

How important is it for you as a business owner to go to

Jon Clayton:

networking events or other in-person events like conferences and workshops?

Jon Clayton:

Well, if your answer is not very important.

Jon Clayton:

You might rethink your position on it.

Jon Clayton:

After this episode of architecture business club, the weekly podcast for

Jon Clayton:

solo and small firm architecture practice owners, just like you who want to build

Jon Clayton:

a profitable future proof architecture business that fits around their life.

Jon Clayton:

I'm the host John Clayton.

Jon Clayton:

And if you want the business in architecture that gives you more freedom,

Jon Clayton:

flexibility, and fulfillment, then go to architecture, business club.com

Jon Clayton:

forward slash blueprint and download the architecture business blueprint.

Jon Clayton:

It's the step-by-step formula to freedom for architects, architectural

Jon Clayton:

technologists and architectural designers.

Jon Clayton:

And it's absolutely free as a gift from me now let's discuss

Jon Clayton:

networking and in-person events.

Jon Clayton:

Hey everybody.

Jon Clayton:

Welcome to the podcast today, it's all about networking and

Jon Clayton:

attending in-person events.

Jon Clayton:

So I'm going to talk a little bit about.

Jon Clayton:

Why these events matter?

Jon Clayton:

And to give you some suggestions about how you can handle them,

Jon Clayton:

particularly if you're a little bit shy.

Jon Clayton:

Or perhaps if there isn't anything local to you.

Jon Clayton:

Why bother to go to networking events or, or the in-person events

Jon Clayton:

like workshops and conferences?

Jon Clayton:

There are an opportunity for growth so you can meet new people who might be

Jon Clayton:

potential clients, future collaborators, maybe your next mentor, you can get

Jon Clayton:

new ideas, you can discover new trends, whether that's, within architecture, if

Jon Clayton:

you're attending an architecture specific event or whether that's to do with.

Jon Clayton:

Business and marketing.

Jon Clayton:

If it's a more general business networking event or workshop.

Jon Clayton:

But ultimately it's about meeting people and building relationships.

Jon Clayton:

There's also opportunities for learning and development Visibility,

Jon Clayton:

you can build your visibility.

Jon Clayton:

You can be seen as the face of your practice.

Jon Clayton:

People can get to know you and it can help build your credibility.

Jon Clayton:

if that is enough reason to go along then there's usually free tea and

Jon Clayton:

coffee and maybe some free pastries.

Jon Clayton:

If you're lucky.

Jon Clayton:

So there's a few common myths about networking.

Jon Clayton:

That networking's only for extroverts, that if you go to a networking

Jon Clayton:

event that you need to like sell aggressively and that's going to

Jon Clayton:

be the same that other people are going to be trying to sell to you.

Jon Clayton:

Thrusting business cards into your hands.

Jon Clayton:

That if it's a regular event that you need to attend every time.

Jon Clayton:

Also the networking doesn't really lead to any tangible results.

Jon Clayton:

That you have to be some kind of smooth talker.

Jon Clayton:

To be successful at networking.

Jon Clayton:

That networking is just a one time event once and done.

Jon Clayton:

And then go into networking in person events is just about

Jon Clayton:

what you get from all those.

Jon Clayton:

So, I mean, I could challenge all of those points.

Jon Clayton:

I always think it's best to go with the serve first mindset that if you go to a

Jon Clayton:

networking event with the attitude of.

Jon Clayton:

I'm here to listen to people, to hear their stories and to

Jon Clayton:

find opportunities to help them.

Jon Clayton:

Then that is a far better approach than going in there.

Jon Clayton:

In a sales mindset thinking I need new customers.

Jon Clayton:

I need to.

Jon Clayton:

Get at my target is to give out as many of my business cards as possible.

Jon Clayton:

I really would not recommend that approach.

Jon Clayton:

To networking events and in-person events at all.

Jon Clayton:

I'm going to talk a little bit, actually about the point about

Jon Clayton:

the distrust for extroverts.

Jon Clayton:

There are.

Jon Clayton:

Plenty of ways that introverts can push a little bit out of the comfort zone and to.

Jon Clayton:

Get a really good return on investment for the energy that they

Jon Clayton:

put into going to networking events.

Jon Clayton:

We'll swing back and talk about that in a little while.

Jon Clayton:

Do you really need to go to any networking or in person events?

Jon Clayton:

Nobody's forcing you to go to networking events or to conferences.

Jon Clayton:

You don't have to go, but it's definitely beneficial for you.

Jon Clayton:

And your business.

Jon Clayton:

So.

Jon Clayton:

It's a case of weighing up the pros and cons for you.

Jon Clayton:

Based on your goals, on the goals for your business.

Jon Clayton:

There are alternatives.

Jon Clayton:

If for whatever reason.

Jon Clayton:

You just can't get to in-person events.

Jon Clayton:

You can attend online events.

Jon Clayton:

There's plenty of virtual events.

Jon Clayton:

That is definitely an option for you.

Jon Clayton:

You can engage in online communities and forums and you can still

Jon Clayton:

get benefits there and start to build relationships that way.

Jon Clayton:

But I don't think anything beats the impact of just.

Jon Clayton:

Being somebody in person and just getting in front of somebody in person.

Jon Clayton:

So what if you're shy?

Jon Clayton:

Now.

Jon Clayton:

Believe it or not, this might surprise you.

Jon Clayton:

Would be being a podcast.

Jon Clayton:

I'm.

Jon Clayton:

I'm quite shy.

Jon Clayton:

I'm not an extrovert.

Jon Clayton:

I'm really more of an introverted person.

Jon Clayton:

And I mean, my early experiences of networking, I got invited

Jon Clayton:

to networking events.

Jon Clayton:

I said no to most of them.

Jon Clayton:

And, I would kind of actively go out of my way to avoid going to

Jon Clayton:

networking events or in-person events.

Jon Clayton:

Uh, didn't really feel comfortable.

Jon Clayton:

Um, there was some that I went to in the early days where it was

Jon Clayton:

like a lunchtime CPD organized by a local building control company.

Jon Clayton:

And.

Jon Clayton:

That felt a bit more comfortable because I knew that there was going

Jon Clayton:

to be a few familiar faces that.

Jon Clayton:

But the thought of walking in a room full of people that were all chatting away and

Jon Clayton:

me not knowing any of them, it kind of scared the living daylights out of me.

Jon Clayton:

So I really didn't do.

Jon Clayton:

Anywhere near north networking or attending events for many years.

Jon Clayton:

And in particular, when we, as a family, relocated across the UK from

Jon Clayton:

Lancaster to Norfolk back in 2016.

Jon Clayton:

And at that point, I totally avoided going to any networking

Jon Clayton:

events or in-person events.

Jon Clayton:

And with hindsight, I think as a consequences was one of the reasons

Jon Clayton:

why I really struggled to get my.

Jon Clayton:

Architecture business off the ground in Norfolk.

Jon Clayton:

Sales typically call from four different ways.

Jon Clayton:

There's referrals.

Jon Clayton:

Relationships, outbound sales and ads.

Jon Clayton:

So advertising.

Jon Clayton:

But then I didn't have the budget for paid advertising.

Jon Clayton:

I didn't even know the outbound sales was a thing.

Jon Clayton:

My past relationships had generally been built by accident.

Jon Clayton:

There was no strategy behind it.

Jon Clayton:

Pretty much all of my work, all of my paid work, all of my

Jon Clayton:

clients had come from referrals.

Jon Clayton:

And how to realize that building new relationships was one of the most

Jon Clayton:

potent ways for me to get new customers.

Jon Clayton:

I would've leaned into that.

Jon Clayton:

Instead of hiding behind my computer.

Jon Clayton:

Writing.

Jon Clayton:

Social media posts and creating social media graphics because.

Jon Clayton:

That's what a lot of the online gurus had taught me, the videos that I'd seen

Jon Clayton:

on YouTube about how to get customers.

Jon Clayton:

A lot of those people online were telling you it was all about social

Jon Clayton:

media, Some people get sales from social media, but, you know, in

Jon Clayton:

terms of what you can control.

Jon Clayton:

And what has the most impact.

Jon Clayton:

Focusing on people and building relationships.

Jon Clayton:

I believe now is far more important than any of those other

Jon Clayton:

things that you could be doing.

Jon Clayton:

Remember.

Jon Clayton:

Don't forget to download the architecture business, blueprint the

Jon Clayton:

step by step formula to freedom for architects, architecture, technologists,

Jon Clayton:

and architecture designers.

Jon Clayton:

You can grab the blueprint without any charge@architecturebusinessclub.com

Jon Clayton:

forward slash blueprint.

Jon Clayton:

And if you enjoy this episode, then please leave a five star review or

Jon Clayton:

rating wherever you listen to podcasts.

Jon Clayton:

Now, back to the show.

Jon Clayton:

So.

Jon Clayton:

What if you're shy.

Jon Clayton:

Trying to answer this question for you now.

Jon Clayton:

I mean, Things that you can do.

Jon Clayton:

You can start small.

Jon Clayton:

You can attend a smaller event where it's easy to engage with people to have

Jon Clayton:

one-to-one conversations, without it being too overwhelming, you could bring a

Jon Clayton:

friend or a colleague along for support.

Jon Clayton:

If there's a local event that you could go to.

Jon Clayton:

You can do a little bit of preparation in advance, so you

Jon Clayton:

can do little bit of research.

Jon Clayton:

There might be a list of attendees.

Jon Clayton:

And if there's a speaker.

Jon Clayton:

That could be, a speaker or speakers.

Jon Clayton:

If it's a bigger event that you can connect with in advance, you

Jon Clayton:

can actually reach out to them.

Jon Clayton:

Do a little bit of, I don't want to use the word stalking, cause that sounds a bit

Jon Clayton:

creepy, but essentially that's what it is.

Jon Clayton:

You be going out on to LinkedIn, for example, and.

Jon Clayton:

Finding the speaker, that's going to be at the event and commenting

Jon Clayton:

on a couple of their posts and maybe dropping them a message to say,

Jon Clayton:

Hey, I'm going to be at the event that you're talking about next week.

Jon Clayton:

Really looking forward to meeting you.

Jon Clayton:

It's just.

Jon Clayton:

A little icebreaker so that when you get in the room in person with them, whether

Jon Clayton:

that's the speakers or the attendees.

Jon Clayton:

You've already broken the ice.

Jon Clayton:

You've already got something that you can talk about.

Jon Clayton:

while you were at the event, I mean, Focus more on listening.

Jon Clayton:

do more listening than talking.

Jon Clayton:

So ask some open-ended questions, listen to what people have got to say.

Jon Clayton:

Show some genuine interest in what people have got to talk about.

Jon Clayton:

Listen to the stories, you know, people.

Jon Clayton:

I appreciate good listeners and it takes the pressure off

Jon Clayton:

you because then if you've got.

Jon Clayton:

less that you need to talk about yourself because not every one,

Jon Clayton:

particularly if you're an introvert.

Jon Clayton:

Most of us introverts are, are not comfortable talking about ourselves.

Jon Clayton:

So what I've thrown any events near you?

Jon Clayton:

Something you can do is you can be strategic about which events you attend.

Jon Clayton:

So you could consider traveling to a smaller number of larger

Jon Clayton:

events during the year.

Jon Clayton:

So rather than committing to doing something every week or every month,

Jon Clayton:

you could just go, okay, I'm just going to go to one or two larger events where

Jon Clayton:

there's going to be more people there to meet in a shorter space of time.

Jon Clayton:

And that can work for some people.

Jon Clayton:

So depending on where you're located in the world, it could be something like.

Jon Clayton:

New York build or Chicago build.

Jon Clayton:

If you're in the states or the AI.

Jon Clayton:

Annual conference.

Jon Clayton:

if you're out in Australia, it could be something like city bills.

Jon Clayton:

If you're in the UK.

Jon Clayton:

It could be something like, the Annual conference.

Jon Clayton:

they have a marketing conference called guerrilla tactics and

Jon Clayton:

a lot of regional RBA events.

Jon Clayton:

CIAT for architectural technologists, they have an annual AGM conference event

Jon Clayton:

on their half of the AT awards in London.

Jon Clayton:

later on in the year.

Jon Clayton:

And you've also got London build, which is another huge industry

Jon Clayton:

event in the UK, which I'll talk about a little bit more later on.

Jon Clayton:

So the other thing you could do, you could even host your own event.

Jon Clayton:

If there is anything local.

Jon Clayton:

You could always, you organize your own local meetup or workshop.

Jon Clayton:

this doesn't even need to be anything fancy.

Jon Clayton:

you don't need to provide catering.

Jon Clayton:

You don't need to have speakers.

Jon Clayton:

It could literally just be.

Jon Clayton:

We're doing a meetup and it's at a local cafe or local Pope.

Jon Clayton:

And it's just an opportunity for other business owners to come together.

Jon Clayton:

It could be industry specific for architecture.

Jon Clayton:

If you live in a big city.

Jon Clayton:

It could be a property specific for people from the worlds of property,

Jon Clayton:

construction and architecture.

Jon Clayton:

Or it could be something that's more, generic for the small business owners

Jon Clayton:

and there's advantages to doing.

Jon Clayton:

Any of those types of events, but don't, over-complicate it just,

Jon Clayton:

go out there and give it a try.

Jon Clayton:

Do you think that I should mention again, just a reminder, you can

Jon Clayton:

use online platforms so you can do.

Jon Clayton:

I attend online events.

Jon Clayton:

So you could organize your own online meetups over zoom or

Jon Clayton:

Google meets, whatever you prefer.

Jon Clayton:

And again, it's just another option for you.

Jon Clayton:

If in-person, for whatever reason is it going to be possible?

Jon Clayton:

So when it comes to the networking in-person events, what would

Jon Clayton:

be my top recommendations?

Jon Clayton:

Well, I think the first one really is just got to be.

Jon Clayton:

Be yourself.

Jon Clayton:

Like.

Jon Clayton:

Be your authentic self.

Jon Clayton:

When you go to these events, Share your interests and experiences.

Jon Clayton:

And that authenticity shines fray.

Jon Clayton:

I think that if you can turn up in a room full of people and you can be

Jon Clayton:

comfortable to genuinely be yourself.

Jon Clayton:

That authenticity, like people pick up on it.

Jon Clayton:

It really helps to build trust quicker and it will help you to

Jon Clayton:

build lasting relationships because.

Jon Clayton:

your people in that room will be drawn to you.

Jon Clayton:

If you are your true self while you're there.

Jon Clayton:

Another top recommendation is to actually follow up, going to an

Jon Clayton:

event and meeting people is great.

Jon Clayton:

But if you just meet them once and nothing happens afterwards, like

Jon Clayton:

what a total waste, this could be.

Jon Clayton:

An amazing working relationship that you have together.

Jon Clayton:

It could be a new friendship.

Jon Clayton:

It could be a new partnership.

Jon Clayton:

There could be an ex business partner.

Jon Clayton:

There could be a next mentor.

Jon Clayton:

Follow up with them.

Jon Clayton:

And if you had a really engaging conversation and you've exchanged

Jon Clayton:

contact details, just follow up afterwards and just say, Hey.

Jon Clayton:

Really enjoyed that conversation.

Jon Clayton:

We were having it, they event the other day.

Jon Clayton:

feels like we, we didn't finish the conversation.

Jon Clayton:

Are you interested in catching up sometime?

Jon Clayton:

So that could either be again in person for a coffee.

Jon Clayton:

It could be, online, over zoom.

Jon Clayton:

You figure it out, but do follow up and maintain those connections.

Jon Clayton:

Like those.

Jon Clayton:

Relationships like meeting somebody new.

Jon Clayton:

That's just the star.

Jon Clayton:

the magic is in the follow-up.

Jon Clayton:

What comes afterwards?

Jon Clayton:

The other thing I would suggest you consider is actually setting, setting

Jon Clayton:

some goals around networking in person events and to actually have some

Jon Clayton:

kind of strategy behind it because.

Jon Clayton:

They can be time-consuming and they can cost you money.

Jon Clayton:

Particularly if you are traveling to big industry events that

Jon Clayton:

aren't local, maybe having to pay for a train ticket, a flight.

Jon Clayton:

Hotels, that sort of thing.

Jon Clayton:

The cost of attending an in-person event.

Jon Clayton:

can really Mount up and then obviously it's your time.

Jon Clayton:

Like you never get your time back.

Jon Clayton:

Like that's time you could be working on something else in your business or

Jon Clayton:

delivering results for your clients.

Jon Clayton:

So I would be quite strategic about which events you choose to attend.

Jon Clayton:

And before you get to those events, just be clear on what your goals

Jon Clayton:

are like, what is it that you're looking to get out of this event?

Jon Clayton:

Are you going there?

Jon Clayton:

Because you're looking to learn something.

Jon Clayton:

Are you going there because you want him to make.

Jon Clayton:

X number of new industry connections.

Jon Clayton:

What is it?

Jon Clayton:

What is the reason why you, that it might be a really different reason?

Jon Clayton:

It could be that the main reason is just to be visible.

Jon Clayton:

Maybe you're a new business and you're just wanting to get your name out there.

Jon Clayton:

Get your face out there because you know, people buy from people.

Jon Clayton:

They want to see the face behind the business.

Jon Clayton:

But just be clear on what your own goals and objectives are.

Jon Clayton:

So I hope you found this useful.

Jon Clayton:

If you're interested in attending a large in-person event in the UK with lots of

Jon Clayton:

networking and learning opportunities.

Jon Clayton:

And if you'd like to meet me in person, then.

Jon Clayton:

Why not come and join me at the UKs leading and largest construction

Jon Clayton:

show London Bell's 2024.

Jon Clayton:

It's taking place in November in London.

Jon Clayton:

And I would absolutely love to meet you that if possible.

Jon Clayton:

I'm really excited to share that I'm an opening speaker at the skills and

Jon Clayton:

And you can register for free tickets using the link that

Jon Clayton:

I've put in the show notes.

Jon Clayton:

And I should also add as well.

Jon Clayton:

But I'm planning to host an evening meetup, ideally,

Jon Clayton:

a nearby pub to the venue.

Jon Clayton:

It's going to be really casual.

Jon Clayton:

It's just, you know, no kind of speakers or cringy like intros or anything.

Jon Clayton:

It's literally just going to be meeting with some friends or

Jon Clayton:

like-minded architecture, business owners and people within architecture.

Jon Clayton:

at a nearby Pope to the venue, and I will share more details

Jon Clayton:

about that in the coming months.

Jon Clayton:

Once we pin down the details.

Jon Clayton:

Okay, so that's it for this week.

Jon Clayton:

So I will catch you next time.

Jon Clayton:
